July 21: National Junk Food Day: -- An annual day that grants us permission to chow down on a giant menu of items we usually don't include in our daily diet. Junk foods, by definition, typically contain high fats, sugars, salt, and calories and very little nutritional value. With the advent of packaged foods during the late 1800s, junk food made its way into American life. Still, home-cooked meals remained the standard for several more decades. Eventually, after World War II, the artery-clogging industry took off. Since the population ate out more, traveled more, the industry was primed to produce products at an increased rate. From the frozen food aisle to fast food chains, a myriad of choices for consumers flooded the market. Potato chips, baked goods and so much more filled supermarket shelves, prepackaged and ready to go. By the 1970s, junk foods earned a name and a bad one, too. Michael Jacobson, a microbiologist, is credited with coining the phrase. He also set out to curb our appetite for the high sugar, high salt, high preservative foods Americans consumed at an alarming rate. While deep-fried, fat-laced foods increase our waistlines, cholesterol, and blood sugar numbers, an occasional indulgence shouldn't impact a healthy, diverse diet and lifestyle. Also, producers make healthy versions of our favorite junk foods to entice us to enjoy a little. To observe National Junk Food Day: Snack a little. Chow down on your favorite chip, dip or treat. In fact, treat the family or workplace to a beverage or take out. If you're looking for some international snacking flair, check out 24 Snacks from around the World. Post on social media using #NationalJunkFoodDay. You can also celebrate by taking a walk or doing some yard work to burn off those extra calories! July 21: Legal Drinking Age Day (United States): -- Today we fondly remember the day when we drank our first legal sip of alcohol. People not only get nostalgic about their first drinks and raise a toast to it, but it's also a day to create awareness about responsible drinking among young people. On this day, conversations are also had on how to tackle the rising cases of alcoholism and DUI. The easiest way to celebrate Legal Drinking Age Day is by relaxing with your favorite drink after a long day, if you're over the legal drinking age, of course. Americans have always marveled at how you can legally marry, have children, go to war, purchase a gun, and drive a car before you are allowed to purchase alcohol. While some of these have higher risk factors than drinking alcohol, many Americans are of the opinion that the legal drinking age in the country is ridiculously high. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act was passed by the United States Congress on July 17, 1984. The act stated that although younger people could drink alcohol under supervision, they would have to be at least 21 years of age to be able to purchase it. However, the seven American states of Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Vermont, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania have imposed an outright ban on the consumption of alcohol on those who are younger than 21. Many European countries, including the United Kingdom, have a more liberal drinking age. Some countries even allow children to drink, as long as they do it in the privacy of their homes and under parental supervision. Legal drinking ages have been a point of debate in many cultures and countries. Some feel that it inculcates the habit of drinking responsibly, and that prohibition, on the other hand, encourages children to drink in secret or find unlawful methods to purchase alcohol. July 21 is also the birthday of the noted author and cocktail drinker, Ernest Hemmingway, who was born on this day in 1899. Legal Drinking Age Day is also the appropriate day to celebrate the drinking prowess of the author. July 21: Racial Harmony Day (Singapore): -- Racial Harmony Day aims to serve as a reminder for Singaporeans to be empathetic toward people of all races and faiths. Racial Harmony Day reminds Singaporeans to be proud of their heritage. Singaporeans observe this day by emphasizing the importance of encouraging racial and ethnic harmony and understanding among all populations in their country, as well as celebrating their unique, cross-cultural nature. Singapore's identity as a cosmopolitan nation has evolved. Community Development Councils and People's Organizations were formed to strengthen ties between people in various communities. Since its inception, Racial Harmony Day has since expanded its reach. Today, most activities are organized by grassroots organisations such as the People's Association and the Community Development Councils, and by schools and a number of religious groups. On this day, students in schools across the nation are encouraged to be dressed in other cultures' traditional costumes such as the Cheongsam, the Baju Kurung or Saree. Traditional delicacies are a feature of the celebration. Traditional games such as five stones, zero points, and hopscotch are played, where inter-class competitions are sometimes organised. Some activities introduced by schools include designing Kolams and Maruthani and Henna hand painting. Students are also educated on racism and racial stereotypes. Schools are also encouraged to recite a Declaration Of Religious Harmony during the celebrations. In the week of July 21, representatives from the Inter-Religious Harmony Circle (IRHC) comprising various religious groups also get together to pledge their support and to promote the Declaration. #RacialHarmonyDay! #RacialHarmonyDaySingapore #DeclarationOfReligiousHarmony #RacialHarmony #ReligiousHarmony #Singapore #Empathy #Tolerance #1964RaceRiotsInSingapore #LoveIsTheAnswer #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/tv-commercials-the-cable-age-classics-ii-dvd.html

July 21, 1969: Outer Space Firsts: Moonwalks: The History Of Rocketry: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Space Age: The Space Race: Space Programs Of The United States: Human Spaceflight Programs: The Discovery And Exploration Of The Solar System: Missions To The Moon: Project Apollo: Apollo 11 (AS-11): -- At 02:56 UTC, Astronaut Neil Armstrong becomes the first person to walk on the Moon. On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar lander Eagle made the first manned landing on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. Within hours, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon on July 21 UTC. On July 16, 1969, the mission began with liftoff from Kennedy Space Center at 9:37 a.m. Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two people on the Moon. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours after landing on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft, and collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21.5 hours on the lunar surface before rejoining Columbia in lunar orbit. Apollo 11 was launched by a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16 at 9:32 am EDT (13:32 UTC) and was the fifth manned mission of NASA's Apollo program. The Apollo spacecraft had three parts: a command module (CM) with a cabin for the three astronauts, and the only part that returned to Earth; a service module (SM), which supported the command module with propulsion, electrical power, oxygen, and water; and a lunar module (LM) that had two stages - a descent stage for landing on the Moon, and an ascent stage to place the astronauts back into lunar orbit. After being sent to the Moon by the Saturn V's third stage, the astronauts separated the spacecraft from it and traveled for three days until they entered into lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin then moved into the lunar module Eagle and landed in the Sea of Tranquility. The astronauts used Eagle's upper stage to lift off from the lunar surface and rejoin Collins in the command module. They jettisoned Eagle before they performed the maneuvers that blasted them out of lunar orbit on a trajectory back to Earth. They returned to Earth and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24 after more than eight days in space. The landing was broadcast on live TV to a worldwide audience. Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and described the event as "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Apollo 11 was the beginning of the end of the Space Race (Apollo-Soyuz was the end effectively) and fulfilled a national goal proposed in 1961 by U.S. President John F. Kennedy: "before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." July 21, 1925: The History Of The Automobile: Aero-Engined Cars: Land Speed Records (LSRs) (Absolute Land Speed Records): The Sunbeam 350HP: -- Malcolm Campbell becomes the first man to break the 150 mph (241 km/h) land speed barrier at Pendine Sands in Wales. He drove a Sunbeam 350HP, an aero-engined car built by the Sunbeam Motor Car Company and the first of several land speed record-breaking cars with aircraft engines, at a two-way average speed of 150.33 mph (242 km/h). Major Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE (March 1885 11 - December 31, 1948) was a British racing motorist and motoring journalist. He gained the world speed record on land and on water at various times, using vehicles called Blue Bird, including a 1921 Grand Prix Sunbeam. His son, Donald Campbell, carried on the family tradition by holding both land speed and water speed records. Pendine Sands is 7 miles (11 km) of beach on the shores of Carmarthen Bay on the south coast of Wales. In the early 1900s the sands were used as a venue for car and motor cycle races. The firm, flat surface of the beach created a race track that was straighter and smoother than many major roads of the time. Motor Cycle magazine described the sands as "the finest natural speedway imaginable". July 21, 356 BC: Greece: Ancient Greece: Greek Religion (Ancient Greek Religion): Greek Architecture (Ancient Greek Architecture): Greek Temples (Ancient Greek Temples): The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World (The Seven Wonders Of The World, The Seven Wonders): The Temple Of Artemis (Greek: Artemision) (The Temple Of Diana [Roman Religion]): The Second Temple Of Artemis: Arson: Crimes Against Culture (German: Kulturshade, "Shame Against Culture"): The Destruction Of The Second Temple Of Artemis: -- The Second Temple of Artemis in Ephesus or Artemision (Greek: Artemision; Turkish: Artemis Tapinagi), also known less precisely as the Temple of Diana, a Greek temple dedicated to an ancient, local form of the goddess Artemis (associated with Diana, a Roman goddess), the Greek goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon, and chastity, is destroyed in a vainglorious act of arson by a man, Herostratus, who set fire to the wooden roof-beams, seeking fame at any cost; thus the term herostratic fame. For this outrage, the Ephesians sentenced the perpetrator to death and forbade anyone from mentioning his name; but Theopompus later noted it. In Greek and Roman historical tradition, the temple's destruction coincided with the birth of Alexander The Great (around 20/21 July 356 BC). Plutarch remarked that Artemis was too preoccupied with Alexander's delivery to save her burning temple. The Temple of Artemis was located in Ephesus near the modern town of Selcuk in present-day Turkey. It was completely rebuilt twice, once after a devastating flood and three hundred years later after the act of arson. In its final form was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. By 401 AD it had been ruined or destroyed. Only foundations and fragments of the last temple remain at the site. ========= First Temple: The earliest version of the temple (a temenos) antedated the Ionic immigration by many years, and dates to the Bronze Age. Callimachus, in his Hymn to Artemis, attributed it to the Amazons. In the 7th century BC, it was destroyed by a flood that deposited over half a meter of sand and flotsam over the original clay floor. Although the site was prone to flooding, and raised by silt deposits about two metres between the 8th and 6th centuries, and a further 2.4 m between the sixth and the fourth, its continued use indicates that maintaining the identity of the actual location played an important role to the sacred organization dedicated to the Lady Ephesus, the eunuch priests known as the Megabyzoi. In this great temple, Heraclitus deposited his book "On Nature" as a dedication to Artemis. ========= Second Temple: The new temple built after the flood, reconstructed in an even more grandiose form, was designed and constructed from around 550 BC by the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes. The project was funded by Croesus of Lydia, and took 10 years to complete. It was sponsored at least in part by Croesus, who founded Lydia's empire and was overlord of Ephesus. It was 115 m (377 ft) long and 46 m (151 ft) wide, supposedly the first Greek temple built of marble. Its peripteral columns stood some 13 m (40 ft) high, in double rows that formed a wide ceremonial passage around the cella that housed the goddess's cult image. Thirty-six of these columns were, according to Pliny, decorated by carvings in relief. A new ebony or blackened grapewood cult statue was sculpted by Endoios, and a naiskos to house it was erected east of the open-air altar. A rich foundation deposit from this era, also called the "Artemision deposit", yielded more than a thousand items, including what may be the earliest coins made from the silver-gold alloy electrum, and the earliest inscribed coins, those of Phanes, dated to 625-600 BC from Ephesus, with the legend "I am the badge of Phanes", or just bearing the name "Of Phanes". The temple became an important attraction, visited by merchants, kings, and sightseers, many of whom paid homage to Artemis in the form of jewelry and various goods. It also offered sanctuary to those fleeing persecution or punishment, a tradition linked in myth to the Amazons who twice fled there seeking the goddess's protection from punishment, firstly by Dionysus and later, by Heracles. ========= Third Temple: After this temple was destroyed in the 346 BC act of arson, Alexander The Great offered to pay for the temple's rebuilding; the Ephesians tactfully refused, saying "it would be improper for one god to build a temple to another". After Alexander's death, funded by the Ephesians themselves, the next, greatest and last form of the temple was rebuilt, with work starting in 323 BC and continuing for many years. The third temple was larger than the second; 137 m (450 ft) long by 69 m (225 ft) wide and 18 m (60 ft) high, with more than 127 columns. Athenagoras of Athens names Endoeus, a pupil of Daedalus, as sculptor of Artemis' main cult image. Pausanias (c. 2nd century AD) reports another image and altar in the temple, dedicated to Artemis Protothronia (Artemis "of the first seat") and a gallery of images above this altar, including an ancient figure of Nyx (the primordial goddess of Night) by the sculptor Rhoecus (6th century BC). Pliny describes images of Amazons, the legendary founders of Ephesus and Ephesian Artemis' original proteges, carved by Scopas. Literary sources describe the temple's adornment by paintings, columns gilded with gold and silver, and religious works of renowned Greek sculptors Polyclitus, Pheidias, Cresilas, and Phradmon. The third temple is described in Antipater of Sidon's list of the world's Seven Wonders: "I have set eyes on the wall of lofty Babylon on which is a road for chariots, and the statue of Zeus by the Alpheus, and the hanging gardens, and the colossus of the Sun, and the huge labour of the high pyramids, and the vast tomb of Mausolus; but when I saw the house of Artemis that mounted to the clouds, those other marvels lost their brilliancy, and I said, 'Lo, apart from Olympus, the Sun never looked on aught so grand'." This reconstruction survived for 600 years, and appears multiple times in early Christian accounts of Ephesus. According to the New Testament, the appearance of the first Christian missionary in Ephesus caused locals to fear for the temple's dishonor. The 2nd-century Acts of John includes an apocryphal tale of the temple's destruction: the apostle John prayed publicly in the Temple of Artemis, exorcising its demons and "of a sudden the altar of Artemis split in many pieces... and half the temple fell down," instantly converting the Ephesians, who wept, prayed or took flight. Against this, a Roman edict of 162 AD acknowledges the importance of Artemesion, the annual Ephesian festival to Artemis, and officially extends it from a few holy days over March-April to a whole month, "one of the largest and most magnificent religious festivals in Ephesus' liturgical calendar". In 268 AD, the temple was destroyed or damaged in a raid by the Goths, an East Germanic tribe; in the time of emperor Gallienus: "Respa, Veduc and Thuruar, leaders of the Goths, took ship and sailed across the strait of the Hellespont to Asia. There they laid waste many populous cities and set fire to the renowned temple of Diana at Ephesus," reported Jordanes in Getica. It is, however, unknown to what extent the temple was damaged. Whatever the extent of the injuries to the building, it appears to have been rebuilt or repaired, as the temple is noted to have been in use for worship during the rise of Christianity, and closed as a consequence of the Persecution of pagans in the late Roman Empire. However, the history of the temple between 268 and its closure by the Christian persecutions is not well known, and it is unconfirmed how big the damage of 268 was, and exactly which year it was closed by the Christians. Ammonius of Alexandria comments on the closure of the temple in his commentary of the Acts of the Apostles in the mid 5th century, in which he gives the impression that the closure of the temple had occurred in his living memory. The closure of the Temple of Artemis is assumed to have occurred sometime during the course of the early to mid 5th century, with the year of 407 as an early date. The closure of the temple was followed by the erasing of the name of Artemis from inscriptions around the city of Ephesus. ========= Final Destruction: It is unknown how long the building stood after the closure of the temple by the Christians. At least some of the stones from the temple were eventually used in construction of other buildings. Some of the columns in Hagia Sophia originally belonged to the temple of Artemis, and the Parastaseis syntomoi chronikai records the re-use of several statues and other decorative elements from the temple, throughout Constantinople. The main primary sources for the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus are Pliny the Elder's Natural History, Pomponius Mela, and Plutarch's Life of Alexander (referencing the burning of the Artemiseum). Cyril of Alexandria credited Archbishop of Constantinople John Chrysostom with destroying the temple, referring to him as "the destroyer of the demons and overthrower of the temple of Diana". A later Archbishop of Constantinople, Proclus, noted the achievements of John, saying "In Ephesus, he despoiled the art of Midas", although there is little evidence to support this claim. July 21, 1645: China: The History Of China: Imperial China: The Qing Dynasty (The Great Qing): Crimes Against Culture (German: Kulturshade, "Shame Against Culture"): Tifayifu (Chinese: "Shaving Hair And Changing Costume"): The Queue Order (The Tonsure Decree): -- Dorgon (Manchu: "Badger", November 17, 1612 - December 31, 1650), Manchu prince and regent of the early Qing Dynasty of Imperial China, issues The Queue Order, an edict involving a series of violently imposed laws ordering all Han Chinese men to shave their forehead and braid the rest of their hair into a queue identical to those of the Manchus. The Queue Order was ultimately imposed on Taiwanese indigenous peoples over a century later 1753, and on Koreans who settled in northeast China in the late 19th century, though the Ryukyuan people of the Ryukyu Kingdom, a tributary of China, requested and were granted an exemption from the mandate. Tifayifu was a cultural policy that forced Han Chinese people to adopt the Manchu hairstyle, the queue, and Manchu clothing. After the Manchu captured Nanjing, the southern capital of China, from the Southern Ming in 1645, the Tifayifu policy was enforced severely. The Qing rulers demanded that men among their newly defeated subjects adopt the Manchu hairstyle or face execution. The law was strongly opposed by the Han Chinese, especially those who were part of the late-Ming scholar and literati class. The edict ran completely against Han Chinese tradition, whose adult men did not cut their hair for philosophical and cultural reasons. According to the Classic of Filial Piety, Confucius said "We are given our body, skin and hair from our parents; which we ought not to damage. This idea is the quintessence of filial duty. As a result of this ideology, both men and women had wound their hair into a bun (a topknot) or other various hairstyles. July 21, 1970: Egyptian History: Modern Egyptian History: Crimes Against Culture (German: Kulturshade, "Shame Against Culture"): The Inundation Of Lower Nubia, Southern Egypt And Northern Sudan: The Aswan Dam (The Aswan High Dam): -- After 11 years of construction, the Aswan High Dam in Egypt is completed, some two months before the death of its patron, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The Aswan Dam, or more specifically since the 1980s, the Aswan High Dam, is one of the world's largest embankment dams, which was built across the Nile in Aswan, Egypt, between 1960 and 1970. Its significance largely eclipsed the previous Aswan Low Dam initially completed in 1902 downstream. Based on the success of the Low Dam, then at its maximum utilization, construction of the High Dam became a key objective of the government following the Egyptian Revolution of 1952; with its ability to better control flooding, provide increased water storage for irrigation and generate hydroelectricity, the dam was seen as pivotal to Egypt's planned industrialization. Like the earlier implementation, the High Dam has had a significant effect on the economy and culture of Egypt. Before the High Dam was built, even with the old dam in place, the annual flooding of the Nile during late summer had continued to pass largely unimpeded down the valley from its East African drainage basin. These floods brought high water with natural nutrients and minerals that annually enriched the fertile soil along its floodplain and delta; this predictability had made the Nile valley ideal for farming since ancient times. However, this natural flooding varied, since high-water years could destroy the whole crop, while low-water years could create widespread drought and consequently famine. Both these events had continued to occur periodically. As Egypt's population grew and technology increased, both a desire and the ability developed to completely control the flooding, and thus both protect and support farmland and its economically important cotton crop. With the greatly increased reservoir storage provided by the High Aswan Dam, the floods could be controlled and the water could be stored for later release over multiple years. The Aswan Dam was designed by the Moscow-based Hydroproject Institute. Twenty-two monuments and architectural complexes that were threatened by flooding from Lake Nasser, including the Abu Simbel temples, were preserved by moving them to the shores of the lake under UNESCO's Nubia Campaign entitled The International Campaign To Save The Monuments Of Nubia. This project, in particular the creation of a coalition of 50 countries behind the project, led to the creation of the World Heritage Convention in 1972, and thus to the modern system of World Heritage Sites. Also moved were Philae, Kalabsha and Amada. Some of these monuments were granted to countries that helped with the works: The Debod temple to Madrid; The Temple of Dendur to the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York; The Temple of Taffeh to the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden of Leiden; and The Temple of Ellesyia to the Museo Egizio of Turin. Other of these monuments were removed to the garden area of the Sudan National Museum of Khartoum: The temple of Ramses II at Aksha; The temple of Hatshepsut at Buhen; The temple of Khnum at Kumma; The tomb of the Nubian prince Djehuti-hotep at Debeira; The temples of Dedwen and Sesostris III at Semna; The granite columns from the Faras Cathedral; and a part of the paintings of the Faras Cathedral, the other part being in the National Museum of Warsaw. The Temple of Ptah at Gerf Hussein had its free-standing section reconstructed at New Kalabsha, alongside the Temple of Kalabsha, Beit el-Wali, and the Kiosk of Qertassi. The remaining archaeological sites, including the Buhen fort and the cemetery of Fadrus were flooded by Lake Nasser. July 21, 1861: The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): The Eastern Theater Of The American Civil War: The First Battle Of Bull Run (The Battle Of First Manassas): -- At Manassas Junction, Virginia, the first major battle of the war begins and ends in a victory for the Confederate army. On July 16, 1861, at the order of President Abraham Lincoln, Union troops began a 25-mile march into Virginia for what will become the First Battle Of Bull Run, the first major land battle of the war. The First Battle Of Bull Run (the name used by Union forces), also known as the First Battle of Manassas (the name used by Confederate forces), was fought on July 21, 1861 in Prince William County, Virginia, just north of the city of Manassas and about 25 miles west-southwest of Washington, D.C. It was the first major battle of the American Civil War. The Union's forces were slow in positioning themselves, allowing Confederate reinforcements time to arrive by rail. Each side had about 18,000 poorly trained and poorly led troops in their first battle. It was a Confederate victory, followed by a disorganized retreat of the Union forces. Just months after the start of the war at Fort Sumter, the Northern public clamored for a march against the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, which was expected to bring an early end to the rebellion. Yielding to political pressure, Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell led his unseasoned Union Army across Bull Run against the equally inexperienced Confederate Army of Brig. Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard camped near Manassas Junction. McDowell's ambitious plan for a surprise flank attack on the Confederate left was poorly executed by his officers and men; nevertheless, the Confederates, who had been planning to attack the Union left flank, found themselves at an initial disadvantage. Confederate reinforcements under Brig. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston arrived from the Shenandoah Valley by railroad, and the course of the battle quickly changed. A brigade of Virginians under the relatively unknown brigadier general from the Virginia Military Institute, Thomas J. Jackson, stood its ground, which resulted in Jackson receiving his famous nickname, "Stonewall". The Confederates launched a strong counterattack, and as the Union troops began withdrawing under fire, many panicked and the retreat turned into a rout. McDowell's men frantically ran without order in the direction of Washington, D.C. Both armies were sobered by the fierce fighting and many casualties, and realized that the war was going to be much longer and bloodier than either had anticipated. The Battle of First Bull Run highlighted many of the problems and deficiencies that were typical of the first year of the war. Units were committed piecemeal, attacks were frontal, infantry failed to protect exposed artillery, tactical intelligence was nil, and neither commander was able to employ his whole force effectively. McDowell, with 35,000 men, was only able to commit about 18,000, and the combined Confederate forces, with about 32,000 men, committed only 18,000. The marchers, many dressed in white, walk two abreast, flanked by two reporters with notepads. Police meet the demonstrators downtown where Albany police chief Laurie Pritchett speaks to the crowd through a bullhorn. Georgia state troopers stand in a line, apparently blocking traffic from the street; city officials relied on the assistance of troopers during many of the marches. Police stand by and watch as Reverend Samuel B. "Benny" Wells leads the demonstrators in prayer; as he prays, they kneel or sit on the sidewalk. Next, the marchers sing and clap their hands in an alley, most likely in "Freedom Alley", a dead-end street beside City Hall where arrested civil rights protesters often waited for booking. The clip ends with policemen standing in the street near a movie theater in Albany. On July 21, Albany city officials had obtained a federal injunction against local and national leaders restraining them from leading marches and other demonstrations. At a scheduled mass meeting held that evening at Shiloh Baptist Church, Reverend Wells, who was not named in the injunction, volunteered to lead a march. Over one hundred people followed him downtown and were arrested; another fifty marched later that night and joined those already in jail. The night march on July 21 was one of the last night marches held in Albany. After violence erupted in response to the marchers' arrest on the evening of July 24, the Albany Movement organized daytime marches to avoid further incidents. The Albany Movement was a desegregation and voters' rights coalition formed in Albany, Georgia, in November 1961. This movement was founded by local black leaders and ministers, as well as members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The group were assisted by Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). It was meant to draw attention to the brutally enforced racial segregation practices in Southwest Georgia. However, many leaders in SNCC were fundamentally opposed to King and the SCLC's involvement. They felt that a more democratic approach aimed at long-term solutions was preferable for the area other than King's tendency towards short-term, authoritatively-run organizing. Although the Albany Movement is deemed by some as a failure due to its unsuccessful attempt at desegregating public spaces in Southwest Georgia, those most directly involved in the movement tend to disagree. People involved in this movement labeled it as a beneficial lesson in strategy and tactics for the leaders of the civil rights movement and a key component to the movement's future successes in desegregation and policy changes in other areas of the Deep South. July 21, 1898: #BOTD: #HBD! Ernest Hemingway, American novelist, short story writer, and journalist, Pulitzer Prize recipient, Nobel Prize laureate (d. July 2, 1961) is #born Ernest Miller Hemingway in Oak Park, Illinois. The economical and understated style of Ernest Miller Hemingway, which he termed the Iceberg Theory, had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short-story collections, and two non-fiction works. Three of his novels, four short story collections, and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature. Hemingway was raised in Oak Park, Illinois. After high school, he reported for a few months for The Kansas City Star, before leaving for the Italian Front to enlist as an ambulance driver in World War I. In 1918, he was seriously wounded and returned home. His wartime experiences formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms (1929). In 1921, he married Hadley Richardson, the first of what would be four wives. The couple moved to Paris, where he worked as a foreign correspondent and was influenced by the modernist writers and artists of the 1920s "Lost Generation" expatriate community. His debut novel, The Sun Also Rises, was published in 1926. After his 1927 divorce from Richardson, Hemingway married Pauline Pfeiffer; they divorced after he returned from the Spanish Civil War, where he had been a journalist. He based For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940) on his experience there. Martha Gellhorn became his third wife in 1940; they separated after he met Mary Welsh in London during World War II. He was present at the Normandy landings and the liberation of Paris. Shortly after the publication of The Old Man And The Sea (1952), Hemingway went on safari to Africa, where he was almost killed in two successive plane crashes that left him in pain or ill-health for much of the rest of his life. Hemingway maintained permanent residences in Key West, Florida (in the 1930s) and Cuba (in the 1940s and 1950s). While he and his wife Mary Saviers were living in Ketchum, Idaho in 1960, he became aware that the FBI was actively monitoring his movements. The FBI had, in fact, opened a file on him during World War II, when he used the Pilar to patrol the waters off Cuba, and J. Edgar Hoover, who had a deep personal animus against Hemingway and considered him both a personal and national security threat (Hemingway had set up an informal intelligence service in Cuba that was at times more effective than the FBI, which Hoover considered an affront), had an agent in Havana watch Hemingway during the 1950s. By the end of November 1960, Mary believed was suffering from paranoia due to his awareness that the FBI was monitoring him, and at her wits' end, Saviers suggested Hemingway go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Hemingway agreed, and may have believed he was to be treated there for hypertension. The FBI knew Hemingway was at the Mayo Clinic, as an agent later documented in a letter written in January 1961. In an attempt to maintain anonymity, Hemingway was checked in at the Mayo Clinic under Saviers's name. Meyers writes that "an aura of secrecy surrounds Hemingway's treatment at the Mayo" but confirms he was treated with electroshock therapy (now called electroconvulsive therapy) as many as 15 times in December 1960. He was "released in ruins", a shadow of his former self as a result of the repeated electric shocks to his brain, in January 1961. Author Michael Reynolds was later able to access Hemingway's records at the Mayo, which indicated, incredibly, that that the combination of medications given to Hemingway may likely have been the cause for the depressive state for which Hemingway was "treated". The ultimate result of all this was that he was rendered unable to write with anything the level of competance that an author would consider adequate. Therefore, three months after Hemingway was released from the Mayo Clinic, when he was back in Ketchum in April 1961, Mary "found Hemingway holding a shotgun" in the kitchen one morning. She called Saviers, who sedated him and admitted him to the Sun Valley Hospital; from there he was returned to the Mayo Clinic for more electroshock treatments. He was released in late June and arrived home in Ketchum on June 30. Two days later, in the early morning hours of July 2, 1961, Hemingway "quite deliberately" shot himself with his favorite shotgun. He had unlocked the basement storeroom where his guns were kept, gone upstairs to the front entrance foyer of their Ketchum home, and according to Mellow, shot himself with the "double-barreled shotgun that he had used so often it might have been a friend". He is buried at Ketchum Cemetery. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/hemingway-dvd-documentary-series-on-writer-ernest-hemingway.html

July 21, 1899: #BOTD: #HBD! Hart Crane, American poet (d. April 27, 1932) is #born Harold Hart Crane in Garrettsville, Ohio. Finding both inspiration and provocation in the poetry of T. S. Eliot, Hart Crane wrote modernist poetry that was difficult, highly stylized, and ambitious in its scope. In his most ambitious work, The Bridge, Crane sought to write an epic poem, in the vein of The Waste Land, that expressed a more optimistic view of modern, urban culture than the one that he found in Eliot's work. In the years following his suicide at the age of 32, Crane has been hailed by playwrights, poets, and literary critics alike (including Robert Lowell, Derek Walcott, Tennessee Williams, and Harold Bloom), as being one of the most influential poets of his generation. Hart Crane died when just before noon he jumped overboard into the Gulf of Mexico from the steamship Orizaba, en route to New York from Mexico, after he was beaten up after making sexual advances to a male crew member. Although he had been drinking heavily and left no suicide note, witnesses believed his intentions to be suicidal, as several reported that he exclaimed "Goodbye, everybody!" before throwing himself overboard. His body was never recovered. A marker on his father's tombstone at Park Cemetery outside Garrettsville, Portage County, Ohio includes the inscription, "Harold Hart Crane 1899-1932 lost at sea". In 1928, he enrolled at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied until 1931 before going on to study privately with Louis Persinger. He returned to the San Francisco Conservatory to study for five years with Naoum Blinder, to whom he said he owed the most. At his public debut on 18 February 1936, aged 15, he played Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor with the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of Pierre Monteux. In 1940, Stern began performing with Russian-born pianist Alexander Zakin, collaborating until 1977. Reflecting on his background, Stern once memorably quipped that cultural exchanges between the U.S. and Soviet Russia were simple affairs: "They send us their Jews from Odessa, and we send them our Jews from Odessa.". Within musical circles, Stern became renowned both for his recordings and for championing certain younger players. Among his discoveries were cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Jian Wang, and violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. In the 1960s, he also played a major role in saving New York City's Carnegie Hall from demolition, by organising the Citizens' Committee to Save Carnegie Hall. Following the purchase of Carnegie Hall by New York City, the Carnegie Hall Corporation was formed, and Stern was chosen as its first president, a title he held until his death at age 81 of heart failure in a Manhattan, New York, hospital after an extended stay. July 21, 1944: German Resistance To Nazism (German: Widerstand): Assassination Attempts On Adolf Hitler: The July 20, 1944 Assassination Attempt On Adolf Hitler (The 20 July Plot, The July 20 Plot): -- German Army Claus von Stauffenberg and fellow conspirators 1st Lt. Werner von Haeften, General Friedrich Olbricht and Colonel Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim, are tortured and executed in Berlin, Germany, for the July 20 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. On July 20, 1944, Adolf Hitler survived an assassination attempt led by Stauffenberg. Known as the 20 July Plot or the July 20 Plot, on that date Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Fuehrer of Nazi Germany, inside his Wolf's Lair field headquarters near Rastenburg, East Prussia. The name Operation Valkyrie, originally referring to part of the conspiracy, has become associated with the entire event. The apparent purpose of the assassination attempt was to seize political control of Germany and its armed forces from the Nazi Party (including the SS) and to make peace with the western Allies as soon as possible. The underlying desire of many of the involved high-ranking Wehrmacht officers was apparently to show to the world that not all Germans were like Hitler and the Nazi Party. The plot was the culmination of efforts by several groups in the German resistance to overthrow the Nazi German government. The failure of the assassination attempt and the intended military coup d'etat that was to follow led the Gestapo to arrest more than 7,000 people, of whom they executed 4,980. After several unsuccessful tries by Stauffenberg to meet Hitler, Goering and Himmler when they were together, Stauffenberg went ahead with the attempt at the Wolf's Lair on 20 July 1944. Stauffenberg entered the briefing room carrying a briefcase containing two small bombs. The location had unexpectedly been changed from the subterranean Fuhrerbunker to Albert Speer's wooden barrack/hut due to it being a hot summer's day. He left the room to arm the first bomb with specially adapted pliers, a task made difficult because he had lost his right hand and had only three fingers on his left. A guard knocked and opened the door, urging him to hurry as the meeting was about to begin. As a result, Stauffenberg was able to arm only one of the bombs. He left the second bomb with his aide-de-camp, Werner von Haeften, and returned to the briefing room, where he placed the briefcase under the conference table, as close as he could to Hitler. Some minutes later, he excused himself and left the room. After his exit, the briefcase was moved by Colonel Heinz Brandt. When the explosion tore through the hut, Stauffenberg was convinced that no one in the room could have survived. Although four people were killed and almost all survivors were injured, Hitler himself was shielded from the blast by the heavy, solid-oak conference table leg, which Colonel Brandt had placed the briefcase bomb behind, and was only slightly wounded. Stauffenberg and Haeften quickly left and drove to the nearby airfield. After his return to Berlin, Stauffenberg immediately began to motivate his friends to initiate the second phase: the military coup against the Nazi leaders. When Joseph Goebbels announced by radio that Hitler had survived and later, after Hitler himself personally spoke on the state radio, the conspirators realised that the coup had failed. They were tracked to their Bendlerstrasse offices and overpowered after a brief shoot-out, during which Stauffenberg was wounded in the shoulder. In an attempt to save his own life, co-conspirator General Friedrich Fromm, Commander-in-Chief of the Replacement Army present in the Bendlerblock (Headquarters of the Army), charged other conspirators in an impromptu court martial and condemned the ringleaders of the conspiracy to death. Stauffenberg, his aide 1st Lieutenant Werner von Haeften, General Friedrich Olbricht, and Colonel Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim were executed before 1:00 in the morning (21 July 1944) by a makeshift firing squad in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock, which was lit by the headlights of a truck. Stauffenberg was third in line to be executed, with Lieutenant von Haeften after. However, when it was Stauffenberg's turn, Lieutenant von Haeften placed himself between the firing squad and Stauffenberg, and received the bullets meant for Stauffenberg. When his turn came, Stauffenberg spoke his last words, "Es lebe das heilige Deutschland!" ("Long live our sacred Germany!") Others say the last words were: "Es lebe das geheime Deutschland!" ("Long live the secret Germany!"), in reference to Stefan George and the anti-Nazi circle. Fromm ordered that the executed officers (his former co-conspirators) receive an immediate burial with military honours in the Alter St.-Matthaus-Kirchhof in Berlin's Schoneberg district. The next day, however, Stauffenberg's body was exhumed by the SS, stripped of his medals and insignia, and cremated. Another central figure in the plot was Stauffenberg's eldest brother, Berthold Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. On 10 August 1944, Berthold was tried before Judge-President Roland Freisler in the special "People's Court" (Volksgerichtshof). This court was established by Hitler for political offences. Berthold was one of eight conspirators executed by slow strangulation in Plotzensee Prison, Berlin, later that day. Before he was killed, Berthold was strangled and then revived multiple times. The entire execution and multiple resuscitations were filmed for Hitler to view at his leisure. More than 200 were condemned in show trials and executed. Hitler used the 20 July Plot as an excuse to destroy anyone he feared would oppose him. The traditional military salute was replaced with the Nazi salute also known as the Hitler salute. Eventually, over 20,000 Germans were killed or sent to concentration camps in the purge. John Thomas Scopes, The Scopes Monkey Trial): -- In Dayton, Tennessee, high school biology teacher John T. Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution in class and fined 100 USD. On July 10, the so-called "Monkey Trial" of John T. Scopes began. The Scopes Trial, formally known as The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes and commonly referred to as the Scopes Monkey Trial, was an American legal case in July 1925 in which a young substitute high school science teacher, John T. Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which had made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school. The trial was deliberately staged in order to attract publicity to the small town of Dayton, Tennessee, where it was held. Scopes was unsure whether he had ever actually taught evolution, but he purposely incriminated himself so that the case could have a defendant. Scopes was found guilty and fined 100 USD (equal to 1395 USD in 2017), but the verdict was overturned on a technicality. The trial served its purpose of drawing intense national publicity, as national reporters flocked to Dayton to cover the big-name lawyers who had agreed to represent each side. William Jennings Bryan, three-time presidential candidate, argued for the prosecution, while Clarence Darrow, the famed defense attorney, spoke for Scopes. The trial publicized the Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy, which set Modernists, who said evolution was not inconsistent with religion, against Fundamentalists, who said the word of God as revealed in the Bible took priority over all human knowledge. The case was thus seen as both a theological contest and a trial on whether "modern science" should be taught in schools. July 21, 1954: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Indochina Wars: The First Indochina War (1946-1954) (The Indochina War, The Anti-French Resistance War, The French-Indochina War): The Korean Conflict: The 1954 Geneva Conference (The Geneva Conference): -- Vietnam is partitioned into North Vietnam and South Vietnam, pursuant to the The Geneva Conference agreement signed the day prior in Geneva, Switzerland, an agreement that also ended hostilities between French forces in Vietnam and The People's Army Of Vietnam. The Geneva Conference had begun on April 26, 1954 among several nations in an effort to restore peace in Indochina and Korea. It was intended to settle outstanding issues resulting from the Korean War and the First Indochina War. The part of the conference on the Korean question ended without adopting any declarations or proposals, so is generally considered less relevant. The Geneva Accords that dealt with the dismantling of French Indochina proved to have long-lasting repercussions, however. The crumbling of the French Empire in Southeast Asia would create the eventual states of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), the State of Vietnam (the future Republic of Vietnam / South Vietnam), the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the Kingdom of Laos. Diplomats from South Korea, North Korea, the People's Republic Of China (PRC), the Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), and the United States of America (US) dealt with the Korean side of the Conference. For the Indochina side, the Accords were between France, the Viet Minh, the USSR, the PRC, the US, the United Kingdom, and the future states being made from French Indochina. The agreement temporarily separated Vietnam into two zones, a northern zone to be governed by the Viet Minh rebels, and a southern zone to be governed by the State of Vietnam, then headed by former emperor Bao Dai. A Conference Final Declaration, issued by the British chairman of the conference, provided that a general election be held by July 1956 to create a unified Vietnamese state. Despite helping create the agreements, they were not directly signed onto nor accepted by delegates of both the State of Vietnam and the United States, decisions that were ultimately to result in the Second Indochina War, otherwise known as the Vietnam War. In addition, three separate ceasefire accords, covering Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, were signed at the conference. October 29, 1947) is #born Frances Clara Folsom in Buffalo, New York, later christened Frank Clara Folsom. Her great popularity, charm and beauty has often led to comparisons in recent years between herself and late Diana, Princess Of Wales; in 2018, Comedy Central broadcast an episode of Drunk History with the segment "Frances Cleveland Becomes An 'It' Girl", meaning an attractive young woman perceived to have both sex appeal and personality, an expression originating in British upper-class society around the turn of the 20th century and popularized in the 1927 film "It" starring 1920s sex symbol Clara Bow. Frances Clara Cleveland Preston met Grover Cleveland while she was an infant, as he was a friend of her father, Oscar Folsom. When her father died in 1875, Grover became the executor of her father's estate. He took care of Oscar's outstanding financial debts and provided for the well-being of Frances and her mother Emma. She was educated at Wells College, and after graduating, she married Grover while he was the incumbent president. When her husband lost reelection in 1888, they went into private life for four years and began having children. They returned to the White House when her husband was elected again in 1892, though much of her time in the second term was dedicated to her children. The Clevelands had five children, four of whom survived to adulthood; their eldest child, Ruth, is reputed to be the inspiration for the naming of the "Baby Ruth" candy bar. Cleveland involved herself in education advocacy, serving on the Wells College board, supporting women's education, and organizing the construction of kindergartens. She was widowed in 1908, and she married Thomas J. Preston Jr. in 1913. Cleveland-Preston continued to work in education activism after leaving the White House, becoming involved with Princeton University. During World War I, she was active in the movement for American involvement and advocated military preparedness. The summer months are often the busiest for animal shelters around the country due to the combination of Kitten Season and owner surrender appointments, which increases the number of animals in our care. This fun holiday idea is simple - to make some homemade pet toys and supplies and donate them to your local animal shelter. This allows shelters to receive the materials they require while also allowing individuals to contribute to participate without having to spend a lot of money. Continue reading to hear about some fantastic ideas and goods that you can make and contribute to your local shelter right away. Animal cruelty was originally identified as a problem in Britain in the 1820s. In response, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) was established in 1824. This animal welfare organization worked to change people's opinions of how dogs were treated. The S.P.C.A. arrived in the United States in 1866. It was founded by a guy named Henry Burgh, who was criticized and humiliated by many since most people were unconcerned about the situation of dogs. But the idea didn't stop there, and the S.P.C.A. continued to develop. The Women's S.P.C.A. of Pennsylvania establishes the first animal shelter just three years later, in 1869. Over 150 years later, the institution is still in operation, functioning as Bucks County P.A's sole open-intake shelter and providing adoption, training, and veterinary services. Women's Animal Center launched one of the earliest humane education programs in America not long after it was started. Generations later, the emphasis remains on collaborating with kids to create a more caring future for animals. This unique day was established in 2012 as a means for people to give back to local shelters without having to adopt or provide money. Shelters require resources, and many of them may be made from objects found in our houses. So, let's set aside a day to make some entertaining shelter essentials. For those of us who are unable to devote the full day, we may concentrate on one of these tasks at the end of the day while watching late-night comedy television before bed. https://store.earthstation1.com/super-sense--animal-perception-tv-series-dvd-mp4-download-usb-driv4.html

July 21: Invite An Alien To Live With You Day: -- Celebrated annually to remember the four-year-long Pam Dawber and Robin Williams show "Mork & Mindy." The show is about an alien from the planet Ork named Mork, played by Williams, on a mission to Earth to study human behavior. Mork travels to 1970s Boulder, Colorado after his egg-shaped spacecraft lands there. Here, he meets up with Mindy, played by Dawber, who is a young journalism graduate who lets him live in her house. The episodes revolve around Williams' hilarious portrayal of a bumbling alien trying to get a handle on Earth culture along with his frequent dispatches back to his home planet. "Mork & Mindy" is an American television sitcom whose first episode aired on A.B.C. on September 14, 1978. It was created as a spin-off show following a highly successful episode of the comedy show "Happy Days." Mork first appears in the season five episode "My Favorite Orkan" of "Happy Days" in February 1978 and is a take on the 1960s sitcom "My Favorite Martian." This was around the time when "Star Wars" had been released and the show wanted to feature a spaceman to capitalize on the popularity of the film which was - and still is - all the rage. Williams' character, Mork attempts to take Richie Cunningham back to his home planet Ork as a specimen but is foiled by Fonzie. In the first broadcast it turned out to be a dream of Richie's, but when Mork proved so popular, the version was later re-edited to show Mork performing a classic memory wipeout and erasing the experience from everyone's minds. The character of Mork was played by the then-unknown Williams who garnered praise and attention for his portrayal of the alien. The now-iconic actor immediately impressed producers and viewers with his undeniable comedic ability. According to a popular anecdote, when Williams was asked to take a seat at the audition, he sat on his head and producer Garry Marshall cast him on the spot. Marshall later commented that Williams was the only alien who auditioned. Storylines are usually centered around Mork's attempts to understand human behavior and American culture, while Mindy helps him adjust to life on Earth. https://store.earthstation1.com/ufos-are-real-flying-saucers-are-real-dvd.html

July 21: Liberation Day (Guam): -- July 21, 1944: World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Pacific Ocean Theater Of World War II: The Mariana And Palau Islands Campaign: The Battles Of Guam: The Battle Of Guam (1944) (The Second Battle Of Guam) (July 21 - August 10, 1944): -- The U.S. Marines engage in an amphibious landing on opposite sides of the Orote Penisula of the southwest of Guam, beginning The Second Battle Of Guam (21 July - 10 August 1944), the American recapture of the Japanese-held island of Guam. Guam was a U.S. territory in the Mariana Islands captured by the Japanese from the U.S. in the 1941 First Battle of Guam during the Pacific campaign of World War II. Guam, at 212 square miles (543 square kilometers), is the largest island of the Marianas, with a length of 32 miles (52 km) and a width ranging from 12 miles (19.31 km) to 4 miles (6.44 km) at different points of the island. It had been a United States possession since its capture from Spain in 1898 until it was captured by the Japanese on 10 December 1941, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was not as heavily fortified as the other Mariana Islands such as Saipan that had been Japanese possessions since the end of World War I, but by 1944, Guam had a large Japanese garrison. The Allied plan for the Mariana and Palau Islands Campaign invasion of the Mariana Islands, Operation Forager, called for heavy preliminary bombardment, first by carrier aircraft and planes based in the Marshall Islands to the east, then once air superiority was gained, close bombardment by battleships. Saipan, Tinian, and Guam were chosen as targets due to their size, their suitability as a base for supporting the next stage of operations toward the Philippines, Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands; the deep-water harbor at Apra was suitable for the largest ships; and airfields for Boeing B-29 Superfortresses could be built from which to bomb Japan. The invasion of Saipan was scheduled for 15 June 1944, with landings on Guam tentatively set for 18 June. The original timetable was optimistic, however. A large Japanese carrier attack and stubborn resistance by the unexpectedly large Japanese garrison on Saipan led to the invasion of Guam being postponed for a month. U.S. naval and air bombardments lasted from 11-13 June 1944, involving 216 carrier aircraft and land based B-24 bombers. On the 12th and 13th of the month, 12 Japanese cargo ships and several fishing vessels were sunk. On June 27, U.S. battleships started shelling the island, joined by a U.S. carrier group on 4 July, and two more on 6 July, with the total loss of 16 U.S. aircraft. Guam, ringed by reefs, cliffs, and heavy surf, presents a formidable challenge for an attacker. Underwater demolition teams reconnoitered the beaches and removed obstacles from 14-17 July. Despite the obstacles, on 21 July, the American forces landed on both sides of the Orote Peninsula on the western side of Guam, planning to secure Apra Harbor. The 3rd Marine Division landed near Agana to the north of Orote at 08:29, and the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade landed near Agat to the south. Japanese artillery sank 20 U.S. LVTs and inflicted heavy casualties on the landing troops, especially of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade, but by 09:00 men and tanks were ashore at both beaches. By nightfall, the U.S. Marines and soldiers had established beachheads about 6,600 feet (2,000 m) deep. Japanese counterattacks were made throughout the first few days of the battle, mostly at night, using infiltration tactics. Several times the Japanese penetrated the American defenses and were driven back with heavy losses of men and equipment. The U.S. Army's 77th Infantry Division had a more difficult landing on 23-24 July. Lacking amphibious vehicles, they had to wade ashore from the edge of the reef where the landing craft dropped them off. The men stationed in the two beachheads were pinned down by heavy Japanese fire, making initial progress inland quite slow. Supply was very difficult for the landing troops on Guam in the first days of the battle. Landing ships could not come closer than the reef, several hundred yards from the beach, and amphibious vehicles were scarce. The 1st Provisional Brigade blocked off the Orote Peninsula on 25 July, and that same night Japanese Lt. General Takashina counterattacked, coordinated with a similar attack against the 3rd Division to the north. The next day, General Obata reported, "our forces failed to achieve the desired objectives." Lieutenant General Takeshi Takashina was killed on 28 July, and Lieutenant General Hideyoshi Obata took over the command of the Japanese defenders. On 28 July, the two beachheads were linked, and by 29 July, the Americans secured the peninsula. The Japanese counterattacks against the American beachheads, as well as the fierce fighting, had exhausted the Japanese. At the start of August, they were running out of food and ammunition and had only a handful of tanks left. Obata withdrew his troops from the south of Guam, planning to make a stand in the mountainous central and northern part of the island, "to engage in delaying action in the jungle in northern Guam to hold the island as long as possible". After ensuring no significant Japanese forces operated in the southern portion of Guam, Marine Major General Geiger started an offensive north with the 3rd Marine Division on the left flank, and the 77th Infantry Division on the right, liberating Agana on the same day. The Tiyan Airfield was captured on 1 Aug. Rain and thick jungle made conditions difficult for the Americans, but after an engagement with the main Japanese line of defense around Mount Barrigada from 2-4 August, the Japanese line collapsed. The 1st Provisional Brigade formed up on the left flank of the 3rd Marine Division on 7 August because of the widening front and continued casualties, in an effort to prevent the Japanese from slipping through the American gaps. The Japanese had another stronghold at Mount Santa Rosa, which was secured on 8 Aug. On 10 August, organized Japanese resistance ended, and Guam was declared secure, but 7,500 Japanese soldiers were estimated to be at large. The next day, Obata committed ritual suicide at his headquarters on Mount Mataguac after he had sent a farewell message to Japan. A few Japanese soldiers held out in the jungle after the fighting on Guam. On 8 December 1945, three U.S. Marines were ambushed and killed. On 24 January 1972, Japanese Army Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi was discovered by hunters on the island. He had lived alone in a cave for 28 years, near Talofofo Falls. Guam was turned into a base for Allied operations after the battle. Five large airfields were built by the Navy Seabees, and Army Air Forces B-29 bombers flew from Northwest Field and North Field on Guam to attack targets in the Western Pacific and on mainland Japan. Liberation Day continues to be celebrated on Guam every July 21. https://store.earthstation1.com/wwii-films-the-asiapacific-conflict-dvd.html

Today's EarthStation1.com #OnThisDay Commemorative Memorial Title: Man In Space Apollo Eleven 20th Anniversary Alan Shepard DVD, MP4, USB
Today, July 21, 2026
July 21, 1998: #DOTD: #RIP: Alan Shepard, American admiral, test pilot, naval aviator, businessman and astronaut (b. November 18, 1923) #dies from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia in Pebble Beach, California, aged 74. Shepard's widow Louise had planned to cremate his remains and scatter the ashes, but before she was able to do that, she herself died from a heart attack on August 25, 1998, at 17:00, which, coincidentally, was the same time of day at which he had always phoned her when they were apart. They had been married for 53 years. Their family decided to cremate them both, and their ashes were scattered, together, from a Navy helicopter, over Stillwater Cove, in front of their Pebble Beach home. Rear Admiral Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. was an American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot, and businessman. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Shepard saw action with the surface navy during World War II. He became a naval aviator in 1946, and a test pilot in 1950. He was selected as one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts in 1959, and in May 1961 he made the first manned Project Mercury flight, MR-3, in a spacecraft he named Freedom 7. His craft entered space, but did not achieve orbit. He became the second person, and the first American, to travel into space, and the first person to manually control the orientation of his spacecraft. Shepard was designated as the commander of the first manned Project Gemini mission, but was grounded in 1963 due to Meniere's disease, an inner-ear ailment that caused episodes of extreme dizziness and nausea. This was surgically corrected in 1969, and in 1971, Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 mission, piloting the Apollo Lunar Module Antares to the most accurate landing of the Apollo missions. At age 47, he became the fifth and oldest person to walk on the Moon, and the only one of the Mercury Seven astronauts to do so. During the mission, he hit two golf balls on the lunar surface. He was Chief of the Astronaut Office from November 1963 to July 1969 (the approximate period of his grounding), and from June 1971 until his retirement from the United States Navy and NASA on August 1, 1974. He was promoted to rear admiral on August 25, 1971, the first astronaut to reach that rank. https://store.earthstation1.com/man-in-space-apollo-eleven-20th-anniversary-dvd-alan-shepa20.html

July 21, 1967: #DOTD: #RIP: Basil Rathbone MC (Military Cross), South African-born English-American stage, film and television actor, South African American actor and singer (b. June 13, 1892) #dies suddenly of a heart attack in New York City at the age of 75. His body is interred in a crypt in the Shrine Of Memories Mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. Born Philip St. John Basil Rathbone in Johannesburg, South Africa to British parents, he rose to prominence in the United Kingdom as a Shakespearean stage actor and went on to appear in more than 70 films, primarily costume dramas, swashbucklers and, occasionally, horror films. Rathbone frequently portrayed suave villains or morally ambiguous characters, such as Mr. Murdstone in David Copperfield (1935) and Sir Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). His most famous role was that of Sherlock Holmes in fourteen Hollywood films made between 1939 and 1946 and in a radio series. His later career included roles on Broadway, as well as self-ironic film and television work. He received a Tony Award in 1948 as Best Actor in a Play. He was also nominated for two Academy Awards and was honoured with three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Rathbone was deeply affected by the news his younger brother John, a captain in the Dorsetshire Regiment, had been killed in action near Arras on June 4, 1918. In 2012, two letters Rathbone wrote to his family while serving on the Western Front were published. One reveals the anguish and anger he felt following the death of John: "I want to tell him to mind his place. I think of his ridiculous belief that everything would always be well, his ever-hopeful smile, and I want to cuff him for a little fool. He had no business to let it happen and it maddens me that I shall never be able to tell him so, or change it or bring him back. I can't think of him without being consumed with anger at him for being dead and beyond anything I can do to him... 26 July 1918" Following his brother's death, Rathbone appears to have become unconcerned about the dangers of serving at the front. Author Richard Van Emden in Famous 1914-18 speculates that his extreme bravery may have been a form of guilt or need for vengeance. He persuaded his superiors to allow him to scout enemy positions during daylight rather than at night, as was the usual practice to minimise the chance of detection. Rathbone wore a special camouflage suit that resembled a tree with a wreath of freshly plucked foliage on his head with burnt cork applied to his hands and face. As a result of these highly dangerous daylight reconnaissance missions in September 1918, he was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous daring and resource on patrol". https://store.earthstation1.com/shower-of-stars-a-christmas-carol-frederic-march-basil-rathbone-dvd.html

July 21, 2023: #DOTD: #RIP: Tony Bennett, American singer of traditional pop standards, big band, show tunes, and jazz, a painter who created works under his birth name Anthony Benedetto that are on permanent public display in several institutions, founder of The Frank Sinatra School Of The Arts in Astoria, Queens, New York City, and class act (b. August 3, 1926) #dies at his home in New York City following a seven-year battle with Alzheimer's disease, aged 96. His family said he kept singing to the end, lastly "Because of You", Bennett's first major hit, reaching number one on the Billboard charts and staying there for 10 weeks in 1951. Bennett is interred alongside his parents at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York. In February 2021, an article in AARP Magazine revealed that Bennett had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016, though he continued to perform and record until the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. He briefly resumed performing in 2021 for his farewell performances. Bennett's twice-weekly singing practices are thought to have kept his brain stimulated and spared him from symptoms such as disorientation, depression, and a detachment from reality. His neurologist told AARP that, prior to the pandemic, the singer's touring schedule "kept him on his toes and also stimulated his brain in a significant way". Bennett recorded tracks with Lady Gaga from 2018 until early 2020 for their 2021 album Love for Sale, despite at times being "lost and bewildered" during recording sessions. In announcing Bennett's retirement in August 2021, Danny Bennett stated that the Alzheimer's was mainly affecting his father's short-term memory and that he would often forget he had just performed after a concert; his long-term memory remained intact and he could still fully remember all the lyrics to his repertoire when performing. Tony Bennett was born Anthony Dominick Benedetto at St. John's Hospital in Long Island City, Queens, New York City into an Italian-American family, Bennett began singing at an early age. He fought in the final stages of World War II as a U.S. Army infantryman in the European Theater. Afterward, he developed his singing technique, signed with Columbia Records and had his first number-one popular song with "Because of You" in 1951. Several top hits such as "Rags to Riches" followed in the early 1950s. He then refined his approach to encompass jazz singing. He reached an artistic peak in the late 1950s with albums such as The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings. In 1962, Bennett recorded his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". His career and his personal life experienced an extended downturn during the height of the rock music era. Bennett staged a comeback in the late 1980s and 1990s, putting out gold record albums again and expanding his reach to the MTV Generation while keeping his musical style intact. He remains a popular and critically praised recording artist and concert performer in the 2010s. He has won 19 Grammy Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented in 2001) and two Emmy Awards, and was named an NEA Jazz Master and a Kennedy Center Honoree. Bennett has sold over 50 million records worldwide. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-nat-king-cole-show-dvd-set-2-discs-classic-music-t2.html

Today, July 21, 2026
July 21, 1998: #DOTD: #RIP: Bob McAllister, American television personality, magician and children's entertainer and a host of Wonderama (b. June 2, 1935) #dies of lung cancer caused by heavy smoking in New York City at the age of 63. He is buried in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Born Robert C. McAllister in Philadelphia, Pennysylvania, Bob McAllisterfirst made his name as a ventriloquist on NBC on the Today Show in the 1950s, while still in his teens. He appeared in 1953 on CBS on Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour and was able to get his first regular television job hosting his own program on WTAR in Norfolk, Virginia. The "Bob and Chauncey Show" paired McAllister with a wise-cracking dummy ("Chauncey"). This led to his being hired on at WJZ-TV Channel 13 in Baltimore, Maryland in 1963 on The Bob McAllister Show, a half-hour program of comedy character and puppet sketches, magic acts, pantomime, cartoons and sight gags intended to revive the absurd visual surrealism of Ernie Kovacs' television work. The Bob McAllister Show was a big success and led to an offer from WNEW-TV Channel 5 in New York to host his own program there, where it premiered on September 9, 1968. The New York version of the show was not as successful as the Baltimore broadcast, and time constraints and budget restrictions led to its cancellation on Friday, September 5, 1969, after which it went into reruns. McAllister was concurrently brought in as host of the syndicated popular show Wonderama, produced by WNEW-TV, to replace the departing Sonny Fox. McAllister's version of the show premiered Sunday, August 13, 1967, and became Metromedia TV's most popular children's series. It included material similar to that on The Bob McAllister Show with the added attractions of game shows that he selected children in the audience to participate in. These included twisting the tops off cans to see whether snakes or a bouquet of artificial flowers sprung out; the child who opened the sole can with the bouquet won the grand prize. Bob gave each snake-receiver a consolation prize - usually a toy or a board game - for answering a trivia question correctly. The musical theme of McAllister's Wonderama was an orchestral arrangement of the song "I Ain't Down Yet" from Meredith Willson's Broadway musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Audience children typically waved their arms in a diagonal criss-cross fashion over their heads to the beat of the music when it opened and closed each show. McAllister also hosted reproduced Wonderama shows at various locations, including the Six Flags Great Adventure amusement park in Jackson Township, New Jersey, and the Harvard Club of New York. He also found the time to host a few children's television specials for WNEW-TV during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The weekday afternoon version of Wonderama was not as successful as the original Sunday afternoon/Sunday morning format and was dropped on Friday, August 21, 1970, returning to its Sunday morning schedule where it continued until Sunday morning, December 25, 1977. Characters McAllister played on Wonderama and The Bob McAllister Show included: The Crazy Magician, whose attempts at magic usually ended in disaster; Prof. Fingelheimer, a quirky German-accented inventor who sang a nonsensical but catchy song before showing off his latest contraption, a song that resembled the Boodleheimer song by Stuart Hample, originally published in The Silly Book in 1961; a janitor who furnished a can of "instant" whatever and used it to facilitate chores; Mike Fury, a superhero who boasted about his supernatural deeds of daring-do and created "explosions" by taking a bite of his "Super Onion" and exhaling forcefully, and he also taught children healthy hygienic habits (tooth-brushing, washing, nose-blowing, etc.) by setting a good example for them as "a Goody."; Zip Code, a Beatnik folk singer; Thurman, a laid-back farm boy; Salamander Dilly, a spoof on the surrealist painter Salvador Dali, an artist who stroked a brush across a blank canvas, creating an image through a "blue screen" technique, a superimposed video special effect that gradually "wiped" the image onto the canvas along with the path of the brush; and Seymore the Snake, a puppet providing humorous commentary about the show's zany goings-on. In 1973, McAllister hosted a TV special, Herbie Day at Disneyland, which exhibited Herbie the Love Bug of Walt Disney Pictures fame before an excited crowd at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California. This special was produced in conjunction with the personified Volkswagen Beetle's latest feature film, Herbie Rides Again. In 1975, Monty Hall, impressed by McAllister, flew him out to Los Angeles to host a pilot for a new ABC game show called Carnival. By all accounts, the pilot was well-done, but it was never picked up as a series. He was forced to leave Wonderama following the series' Christmas Day 1977 broadcast, reputed to have been the result of his opposition to the violent nature of some of the commercials shown during the show's broadcast. In the fall of 1978, McAllister briefly returned to children's television as the host/performer and interviewer of ABC TV's Kids Are People Too, a show that took its name from the title of McAllister's closing Wonderama theme. However, the show that he was hired to emcee was aimed at teens, not children, and this led to creative disputes with the producers and network executives. In November 1978, Bob McAllister was fired from Kids Are People Too! and he was replaced by Michael Young and later Randy Hamilton as the program's host. McAllister would spend the remainder of the 1970s and 80s performing at corporate banquets and picnics and, for a time, served as co-owner of a roller skating rink at THE MALL in New Rochelle, New York. He tried a return to children's television with an in-school educational program called Tuned In, produced by WNET for PBS in the early 1980s. He played the teacher, Mr. Graff, who involved his pupils in television production. Bob received recognition in the magic field with numerous awards, including the prestigious "Magician of the Year" award from the Society of American Magicians. https://store.earthstation1.com/wonderama-dual-layer-dvd-bob-mcallister-1960s70s-tv-kid196070.html

July 21, 2010: Pests: Agricultural Pests: Cane Toads: -- The Australian Geographic publishes "Cane toad found on WA coast: A stowaway cane toad makes it all the way to Broome in Western Australia.". It warned: "WEST AUSTRALIANS ARE URGED to keep a look-out for rogue cane toads after one of the pests was found to have hitched a ride across the border, ending up in Broome this week. A Broome resident discovered the cane toad on Monday morning in a shed in a light industrial area of the Kimberley town and alerted the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC). District Nature Conservation co-ordinator Sharon Ferguson says it appears the Queensland pest had been accidentally transported across the WA and Northern Territory border. 'It's possible that the toad may have hitched a ride by hiding in road freight, a caravan or another vehicle,' Sharon says. 'There are vehicle checks in place at the WA-NT border, but the toads are not always easily found as they are very good at hiding in small spaces.' Crafty stowaways: Professor Rick Shine from the University of Sydney agrees this is a possibility. "It's true that toads are very adept at stowing away, and I think it's inevitable that toads will be turning up all over Australia," he says. 'The big challenge is to find the populations and exterminate them before they can breed,' Rick told Australian Geographic. 'They are very resilient creatures; capable of surviving in areas I thought would be way too dry - Longreach and Windorah in Central Queensland for example.' Sharon says that people travelling across the WA border need to be vigilant in checking vehicles and equipment to make sure cane toads are not brought into the state. 'As cane toads continue to advance further west into WA, the chances of cane toads hitching lifts on vehicles or freight are likely to increase,' she says. Cane toads are currently found about 35 km west of the WA and NT border, and DEC said they are continuing to work with community groups and local residents to slow the advance of the invasive amphibians." https://store.earthstation1.com/cane-toads-an-unnatural-history-dvd.html

Les Aspin, American captain, Democratic Party politician and economist who served as the U.S. representative for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district from 1971 to 1993 and as the 18th United States Secretary of Defense under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1994 (d. May 21, 1995) is #born Leslie Aspin Jr. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In Congress, Aspin had a reputation as an intellectual who took a middle-of-the-road position on controversial issues. He supported the Reagan administration regarding the MX missile and aid to the Nicaraguan Contras, but he opposed the B-2 bomber and the Strategic Defense Initiative. He played a major role in convincing the House to support the January 1991 resolution supporting the use of force by President George H. W. Bush against Iraq, after it invaded Kuwait. As Secretary of Defense, Aspin faced complex social issues, such as the roles of homosexuals in uniform, and of women in combat, as well as major decisions regarding the use of military force in Somalia, Bosnia, and Haiti. He proposed budget cuts and restructuring of forces as part of the downsizing of the military after the end of the Cold War. The deaths of U.S. soldiers in Somalia because of inadequate military support led to his resignation. After leaving his position, Aspin joined the faculty of Marquette University's international affairs program in Washington and joined the board of directors of the Washington-based think-tank the Henry L. Stimson Center. In March, he became a member of the Commission on Roles and Missions, and in May Clinton chose him to be chairman of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. In March 1995, he began work as chairman of the study group on the Roles and Capabilities of the Intelligence Community (Aspin-Brown Commission). Les Aspin dies in Washington, D.C. of the effects of a stroke suffered earlier in May, complicated by a cardiac disorder. He is interred at Brookfield's Wisconsin Memorial Park cemetery. Aspin had had increasing difficulty during the last years of his life with a congenital heart condition (asymmetric septal hypertrophy; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy/obstructive cardiomyopathy). It necessitated hospitalization during his tenure as Defense Secretary, with placement of a pacemaker.
